Bridges On The Wear

HYLTON BRIDGE

This major bridge carries the A19 trunk road from Tyneside to Teesside and was built between 1970 and 1974 by W. C. French and designed by R. Travers Morgan. The two decks are seperate and together carry four lanes of traffic high above the Wear. On the outskirts of Sunderland, it is built on a bend in the river and footpaths pass below it on both sides. A ferry once existed nearby.
