Bridges On The Wansbeck

OLDGATE BRIDGE

A fairly modern bridge dating from 1970, it replaced an older bridge following the floods of 1963. It is a low and elegant arched bridge at the end of Oldgate, with has several buildings of note. Collingwood House, the home of Admiral Lord Collingwood, and the 17th century Clock Tower, with the church of St Robert with its octagonal spire prominent to the north east of the bridge.

The bridge links the town centre with housing on the west side of the Wansbeck. There have been several bridges (and a ford), at this point, the others having succumbed to floodwaters or simply collapsed.
