Bridges On The Wansbeck

KIRKWHELPINGTON FARM BRIDGE (Horncastle Farm)

Just beyond the A696 bridge a farm track leads from the main road going north, down to the river which is crossed by a simple concrete bridge at a low level. The river flows through three sets of pipes covered in concrete, the roadway being laid over the top. The river is narrow here and the track climbs away up the hill on the north side to Horncastle Farm. This was part of a new road up to the farm replacing the previous main access to the rear, which was used when the ford lying east of the bridge became impassable. A number of small streams feed the Wansbeck west of here.
